Tackling obesity:

How can policy meet the size of the problem?

The National Obesity Action Plan Playbook contributes to advancing policy and national action on obesity by providing policymakers with a practical framework for designing and strengthening national strategies to prevent and manage obesity. Drawing on WHO guidance, global expertise, and case studies, it identifies key action areas and highlights best practices for tackling obesity’s systemic drivers through a whole-of-government and whole-of-society approach.

Despite evidence of the health, social and economic impacts of obesity, no country is on track to halt the rise in obesity rates.

In this webinar Economist Impact was joined by four obesity policy experts to discuss why action is needed and what that action looks like. The discussion covered the need for long-term political commitment across all of government and all of society, with long-term and sustainable funding to support implementation, including examples of where and how this has been achieved.

Our speakers were:

  • Dan Beety, senior director, obesity policy and public affairs, Novo Nordisk
  • Michele Cecchini, head of public health, Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development
  • Andrea Lenzi, president, National Committee for Biosafety, Biotechnology and Life Sciences, Presidency of the Council of Ministers (CNBBSV)
  • David B. Sarwer, director, Center for Obesity Research and Education, Temple University

This webinar was broadcast on 6th March 2025 and was moderated by Elly Vaughan, Senior Global Health Manager, Economist Impact.
