Panasonic: Acknowledging the benefits of positive work-life balance

In 2022, Panasonic, a Japanese multinational electronics company, informed its investors that it would introduce an optional four-day work week, an initiative designed to improve employees’ work-life balance.1 Panasonic’s decision aligns with the company’s goal to enhance employee well-being and competitiveness by accommodating the diverse needs of its 240,000 global employees.2 It also reflects a wider shift within Japan, where the government announced in 2021 that it would encourage employers to move to a four-day work week as part of national economic policy.3

Interest in the four-day work week has been growing for several years, and increased significantly during the covid-19 pandemic as the boundaries between work and home life blurred amid lockdowns and a shift to remote work.

Yet even before the pandemic, studies showed encouraging evidence about the positive well-being and productivity benefits of a shorter work week. A 2019 survey of businesses in the United Kingdom (UK) experimenting with a four-day work week revealed productivity gains in more than 60% of cases. Similarly, when Microsoft Japan trialed a four-day work week that year, it reported a 40% increase in productivity.4,5

Alongside its adoption of a four-day week, Panasonic is also seeking to offer employees greater flexibility by allowing more employees to work from home, and giving them the freedom to turn down job transfers that require them to move—although it remains to be seen if these measures will become a global policy for the company.6
