Tuning in to employee voices
BP, a British multinational oil and gas company, demonstrates how global companies can rely on internal insights gathering- listening to their employee’s needs- to pinpoint employee mental health gaps, needs and opportunities.

BP: Using staff insights to design equitable global support with localized nuance
Central to developing any employee well-being or assistance program is the need to consult with, and listen to, employees to identify the most impactful areas of focus. BP, a British multinational oil and gas company, began its most recent process of improving mental health support to employees in 2012, by introducing a well-being index—reported as an overall score (72% in 2023)—into its annual employee survey.1,2 The company utilized these insights to refresh its well-being strategy, recognizing that mental health is a major global concern, especially for employees early in their careers. By taking an data-led approach to mental health program design, BP acknowledged the combined need for both internal insight gathering—listening to employee needs—and receiving support from senior leaders.

By leveraging insights from internal surveys and taking advantage of external support, BP identified gaps, needs, and opportunities in its staff well-being programs. During its strategic refresh, BP built mental health awareness into leadership training, centralized its employee assistant programs (EAPs) to two main providers, and collaborated with local champions to launch a globally adaptable support campaign sensitive to cultural nuances and differences.3
