  • A new global ocean initiative with a worldwide audience

The logo for The Nippon Foundation is presented, consisting of a green, childlike illustration of a face with two hands up in the air. The name is written in both English and Japanese in a green, sans-serif font.

Our multi-year joint initiative with Japan's largest and most prominent foundation tackles visible and invisible ocean pollution to shape, inspire and catalyse progress.

A key challenge was to reframe the discourse around ocean pollution from one focused mainly on plastics to a broader dialogue which includes chemicals and other contaminants. The initiative's impact will be measured by how awareness of chemical pollution as a priority for ocean health is evolving, and how this in turn is shaping the longer-term objective of “zero pollution.”

The image highlights the contrast between the person's attire and the deep blue color of the nets.An aerial photograph shows an offshore wind farm with numerous turbines standing in deep blue water under a clear blue sky. The closest turbine is in sharp focus, while others recede into the distance.
An underwater photograph captures a large, dense school of fish swimming in a vibrant blue ocean. The fish appear to be moving together in a chaotic but unified mass.
